The University of Barcelona and the Barcelona City Council convene the 5th coupDefouet International Congress on Art Nouveau, which will take place in Barcelona from 5 to 8 November 2026.
In this fifth iteration of the coupDefouet Congress, the main thematic thread proposes to explore fresh perspectives on Art Nouveau architecture and its contribution to a new or modern architecture. Linked to this proposal, the second thematic thread is devoted to Antoni Gaudí and his legacy in modern architecture on the centenary of his death.
The third thematic strand centres on the relationship between Art Nouveau and music. From instruments to musical compositions, throughout Europe this was an intense association which requires further research. Lastly, the section on research and doctoral theses in progress, encouraging doctoral students and veteran researchers to share their analyses and opinions, completes the programme’s four thematic strands.
Abstracts may be submitted to the call for papers until 15 February 2026. Acceptation of proposals will be communicated before 15 May 2026. Full papers will have to be sent in by 15 September 2026. Papers may be written, and presented at the Congress, in English, French, Spanish and Catalan. Simultaneous translation will be provided at the Congress sessions.
The Congress sessions will begin on Thursday, 5 November and run until Sunday, 8 November 2026. Even so, as is customary at a coupDefouet congress, in the period from 1 to 15 November, a wide range of cultural activities related to Art Nouveau will be running, all of which are free for those enrolled in the Congress. We recommend you bear this in mind when planning your participation.
The registration price covers attendance at all the Congress sessions, including refreshment breaks, as well as the official meals and the activities organised and programmed around the Congress. It also gives you access to the written versions of the speeches and papers, most of which will be available before the Congress.
The special early-bird registration of €100 is available until 15 February 2026, after which it increases to €150 until 1 October, and finally €250 for those who sign up at the last moment. Members of the Art Nouveau Club enjoy a special price.
